Hi, I am Mashfiq. Welcome to my personal website.

I am an engineering graduate student having expertise mostly in computational science, applied mathematics, fluid dynamics, and high-performance computing. Following my childhood curiosity on the application of mathematics and physics in real-life, I grew a fascination with designing, modeling, and simulation of practical objects or phenomena. This fascination led me to study and research on computational science and now, it has become a passion and dream career for me. The application areas can be from any discipline of science and engineering, for example, fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, heat transfer, materials, biomedical, and so on, my primary interests lie in modeling and simulation, i.e., the computational aspects of that field.

I joined the North Carolina State University (NCSU) in Summer 2021 as a Ph.D. student. Before joining NCSU, I was a Ph.D. student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for the Spring 2021 semester only. I received my M.Sc. from Oklahoma State University (OSU) in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and a B.Sc. from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in Mechanical Engineering. Before getting admitted to BUET, I completed my Higher Secondary School Certificate (H.S.C.) study from Govt. M. M. City College, Khulna in 2010, and my Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) study from Khulna Zilla School, Khulna.

I am from Shatkhira (a district in Khulna and lies along the border with West Bengal, India) and raised in Khulna until I left home for my undergraduate degree in BUET, Dhaka. Khulna is the third-largest city in Bangladesh, located in the south-western part of the country. Khulna is famous for being a port city, having  Port of Mongla (the second-largest seaport in the country) and having the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest and home of the Bengal tiger. During my study in BUET, I stayed in the Suhrawardy Hall, one of the eight residence halls to provide housing for BUET students. From then on, I lived in Dhaka which is the capital of Bangladesh. During my M.Sc. in OSU, I stayed in Stillwater, a small city in north-central Oklahoma, USA, and in Payne County. Stillwater is popularly known as "Tornado Alley" and is considered one of the best and safest places to live in Oklahoma.

Apart from science and engineering, I enjoy traveling, connecting myself to nature, and doing travel and nature photographies. Among sports, I mostly play table tennis and soccer. I also like to meet people from different cultures and being a foodie, I like to taste traditional cuisines from countries around the world. In my leisure time, I watch movies, quality TV shows, animes, listen to music, and sometimes read books, articles, and comics.

CFD-DEM simulation of air-assisted electrospinning
published in Chemical Engineering Journal

Excited to share that my latest work, "CFD-DEM simulation of air-assisted electrospinning", has been published in Chemical Engineering Journal and is now available online!

In this computational study, we coupled both the aerodynamic and electrostatic fields obtained from COMSOL with DEM simulation of a fiber. One of the most exciting aspects of this study was conducting the air-assisted electrospinning experiments where I had the opportunity to design an airflow chamber in SolidWorks, adhering to all necessary design criteria. I then 3D-printed the chamber to integrate a coaxial and uniform air stream into our existing LE 50 electrospinning setup (a hands-on research activity I rarely get the chance to engage in, as most of my projects are predominantly computational).
